General criteria
Countries: The Visby Program is open for applicants from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.
Study levels: The program is open for PhD-students, post-doc researchers as well as master level students. A few scholarships are reserved for BA-students of the Swedish language and literature.
Fields of study: The program is open for all subjects.
Application deadline: The application must be registered online on March 1 24.00 CET.
Scholarship benefits: The scholarship amounts to SEK 8 000 per month for students/PhD researchers and SEK 12 000 per month for post-doc researchers (holders of a PhD degree).
Program description
Objective
The Visby Programme’s main objective is to strengthen co-operation and network building between Sweden and Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Ukraine in the field of education and research.
Target groups
The program provides PhD students/researchers with an excellent opportunity to conduct research at Swedish universities within all fields of study. PhD students are divided into two categories: The first category consists of students/candidates applying for a consecutive visit as part of their PhD-studies at the home university. The second category consists of students/candidates applying for a scholarship according to the sandwich model (several shorter visits).
Holders of a PhD degree from 2003 or later applying for a post-doc research visit to a Swedish university.
Master level students from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine will be given an opportunity to attend qualified programs.

Who is eligible?
The scholarships are intended for guest students or researchers belonging to any of the above mentioned target groups for temporary studies/research in Sweden.
You are not eligible for this scholarship if any of the following is true:
• You have already lived in Sweden for two years or more when the scholarship period is due to begin.
• You have a Swedish permanent residence permit.
• You have a Swedish work permit and you are not an EU citizen.
There is no age limit for scholarship holders. You need, however, to be fluent in English and you must apply for full-time studies or research.
Students/researchers previously awarded a scholarship from the SI for study or research at a Swedish university will not be given priority.
Selection criteria
The primary evaluation of the application takes into account the applicant?s academic background and personal motivation, the research quality and expertise in the project field of the host department and the strength of the research proposal; its scientific quality, originality, methodological approach and relevance.
In the final selection of candidates, academic fields, study levels, countries and gender will also be considered.
Scholarship benefits and limitations
The scholarship amounts to SEK 8 000 per month for students/PhD researchers and SEK 12 000 per month for post doc researchers /holders of a PhD degree/.
Travel grants
Scholarship holders from all countries within the Visby program receive a travel support in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a lump sum, given only once, regardless of the cost of travel.
Citizens of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine receive SEK 4000.
Citizens from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania receive SEK 2500.
PhD-students with a sandwich-set up will be granted travel grants in connection with every approved visit to Sweden.
Insurance
Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period. For citizens of EU member states and other Convention countries the insurance applies with certain limitations.
Scholarship limitations
The scholarship is designed to cover the living costs for the scholarship holder. There are no grants for family members. No bench fee is provided.
The granted scholarship period cannot be shortened, altered or extended. If you wish to apply for subsequent funding you must apply within a new call for applications.
